Google considera que España necesita una Ley de Propiedad Intelectual "consistente, fuerte y con visión de futuro", que proteja los derechos de autor, pero que a la vez permita el desarrollo de nuevos modelos de negocio en Internet.
La directora de Relaciones Institucionales de Google España, Bárbara Navarro, pidió ayer ante la Subcomisión de Propiedad Intelectual del Congreso que la nueva LPI incluya más "excepciones" sobre los derechos de autor, como "la cita, la parodia o la posibilidad de incluir digitalización de contenidos con fines divulgativos".
En la misma comparecencia, desde las patronales tecnológicas AETIC y ASIMELEC se reclamó que se rebaje y se limite el canon digital por copia privada. Por su parte, la Confederación Española de Consumidores y Usuarios (CECU) pidió una mayor transparencia por parte de las entidades de gestión colectiva de derechos de autor.

“There is a house halfway along the road with its door locked. Not much can be seen from outside because the windowpanes are painted black. From inside comes a strange muffled sound. I stopped by the door for a few minutes without moving. From inside appeared a sheet of white paper. I looked at it for a while and, suddenly remembering I had a black pen in my pocket, wrote: Hello, I’d like to come in. I folded the paper and passed it under the door. From beneath another piece of paper emerged containing the following words:
Learn by heart. Don’t say what you’re thinking because the effort of not doing so intensifies the wish to create another text. Learn by heart. Crumble this bit of paper. Do something without need to learn how to do it. Destroy a set of words. Follow the movement of a sentence from one side to another without any danger. Learn by heart. Learn with your heart. Don’t speak with your heart in your mouth at a place that seems to not contain any measure or degree of intensity. Learn by heart like the poem that remains written in your head and on your body, the story, the song, and the prayer.
I read those sentences once, twice, three times. I sat down. I remained quiet for a while. After 10 or 15 minutes, I turned the sheet of paper over and began to write…”(Extract from a text in the video To Learn by Heart.)

A arquivística colonial passou de assunto histórico a tema da actualidade em 2008, quando um acordo entre os Governos de Portugal e Moçambique permitiu pôr em marcha um processo de recuperação do arquivo de cinema de Moçambique.
"Fora de Campo - sobre o arquivo de cinema de Moçambique" é um projecto de investigação artística sobre os actos de transformação politica e em especial as que constituem o arquivo de cinema Moçambicano. Organizar, preservar, indexar, classificar um acervo de imagens, são actos que operam de acordo com um propósito, uma tendência, um pensamento, num contexto tecnológico e intelectual. Como tal, todas estas acções actuam sobre as imagens induzindo um reconhecimento subjectivo e nesse processo adquirem a capacidade de as transformar.
"Fora de campo" é uma expressão tirada do vocabulário técnico do cinema e que serve de marco para traduzir simultaneamente um método e um território de pesquisa. Trata-se de olhar essas imagens através dos vários dispositivos (técnicos, administrativos e políticos) que as organizam e as exibem, as construções subjacentes e colaterais que, não estando no centro da imagem, nelas influem ao mesmo nível que a cena ou a acção. >> mais infos

icrosoft Corp.'s new Windows 7 computer operating system hopes to pull off a major trick with memory.
Not computer memory, but ours.
It's supposed to make us forget Vista.
The Vista operating system, which Windows 7 will officially replace later this month, had a terrible reputation almost from the time it debuted in 2007.
Because of Vista's technical foibles, sluggish operation and inability to play nicely with some other programs, consumers and professionals shunned it in droves, refusing to update from Microsoft's old, reliable XP operating system.

El próximo jueves 25 de junio, a las 20,30 h., en la sede de la Fundación César Manrique
de Taro de Tahíche, tendrá lugar la inauguración de la exposición Souvenir Souvenir. La
colección de [los] turistas, que podrá verse hasta el 18 de octubre. La muesta está
coproducida por la FCM y el Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife (MHAT), y
cuenta con el patrocinio de La Caja de Canarias.
La exposición, que se desarrolla en dos espacios expositivos paralelos y
complementarios, la FCM y el MHAT (donde se inaugura el viernes 26 de junio), está
comisariada por Fernando Estévez, Mayte Henríquez y Mariano de Santa Ana. Fernando
Estévez es profesor titular de Antropología Social de la Universidad de La Laguna y
coordinador del MHAT; Mayte Henríquez es antropóloga y subdirectora del MHAT; y
Mariano de Santa Ana es periodista e historiador del arte.
Aunque la exposición ocupa simultáneamente dos instalaciones, en Lanzarote y Tenerife,
ambas están integradas visualmente mediante webcams, de tal modo que el visitante de
una sede puede observar en tiempo real un aspecto de la otra mediante estos
dispositivos. Dos espacios que, aun compartiendo un mismo esquema conceptual, son,
sin embargo, totalmente autónomos desde el punto de vista expositivo, donde se
muestran las muy ricas y diferentes dimensiones de ese objeto universal, el más
significativo del consumo turístico, que es el souvenir, el más ubicuo de los objetos
viajeros que presenta, detrás de su atribuida banalidad, una sorprendente complejidad.
El turismo es una de las prácticas culturales que caracterizan a las sociedades
contemporáneas, pero el prejuicio de considerarlo como mera actividad de ocio ha
minimizado el estudio de su naturaleza, alcance e impacto ocultando su carácter
complejo y multidimensional.

La responsable de proyectos de la Fundación Tàpies pronuncia la conferencia La ventana indiscreta el jueves 11 de junio a las 20.00 horas
La responsable de proyectos de la Fundación Antoni Tàpies de Barcelona, Laurence Rassel, pronunciará el próximo jueves 11 de junio, a partir de las 20.00 horas, en el Gabinete Literario la conferencia La ventana indiscreta. Laurence Rassel fue de 1997 a 2008 miembro del equipo directivo de Constant, una organización sin ánimo de lucro con base en Bruselas que pone en relación el pensamiento teórico, el uso crítico de las nuevas tecnologías, el comportamiento artístico y el debate político en la red. Entre otras instituciones ha colaborado con el Centro de Arte Santa Mònica, el Palais des Beaux-Arts, el KunstenFESTIVALdesArts, la Fondation pour l’Architecture y Transmedia-Sint Lukas de Bruselas; el Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen de Amberes; Arteleku, la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía; Studio XX de Montreal; City of Women de Lijubljana; el Piet Zwart Insitute de Rotterdam y la Universitat Politècnica de Belles Arts de Valencia.
Mediante un mosaico de imágenes y textos, durante su conferencia Laurence Rassel presentará las referencias literarias, filosóficas y visuales que se utilizan hoy para reflexionar sobre el archivo en línea y las formas en que puede ser archivada la práctica artística.
El ciclo Cita a ciegas. Encuentros con el arte, que coordina el periodista e historiador del arte Mariano de Santa Ana, es un espacio de reflexión sobre la inflación de visibilidad en la cultura contemporánea, un descomunal bombardeo de imágenes que dificulta la capacidad de la mirada para percibir y expedir significado. Simultáneamente Cita a ciegas es un espacio de análisis de un objeto oscuro, el arte, cuyos límites se han expandido formidablemente hasta el punto de que ya no podemos decir con precisión lo que es, un objeto que para algunos incluso ha dejado de existir, que ha muerto porque ha perdido su histórica razón de ser.

Invited experts analize the problematics associated to the construction of archives today
Working sessions
How do we build an archive with and "for the people, by the people, for the people" [Eric Ketelaar] How do we avoid the alienation of the archive and "what is archived"? How do we build a living archive? These are some of the encompassing questions that Archival Processes will pose to a set of experts for the purpose of sharing a reflection on the limits, responsibilities, and challenges involved in the collective creation of archives like those of Intermediae.
The modern legacy of the archive is a key figure in managing knowledge has been questioned by multiple historicists. Within the field of contemporary culture, the focus on the archive as a fertile and problematic terrain for exploration undergoes continual revisions from the perspective of different agents.
A continual object of debate and research at some institutions -Fundación Antoni Tàpies, the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Tate Modern, or the el Georges Pompidou National Centre for Art and Culture -, recently, beyond controversies about what we forget, ideological representations, or pretensions of totality, new questions have emerged. A sense of urgency places the archive in a constantly expanding territory for studies of the social sciences, humanities, and new technologies, and far from the mythologies through which researchers looked to it in search of "answers".
Jorge Blasco, Daniel García Andújar and Sue Breakell.are the experts Intermediæ has invited to these working sessions.

Websites 'keeping deleted photos'

User photographs can still be found on many social networking sites even after people have deleted them, Cambridge University researchers have said.
They put photos on 16 popular websites - noting the web addresses where the images were stored - and deleted them.
The team said it was able to find them on seven sites - including Facebook - using the direct addresses, even after the photos appeared to have gone.
Facebook says deleted photos are removed from its servers "immediately".
The Cambridge University researchers said special photo-sharing sites, such as Flickr and Google's Picasa, did better and Microsoft's Windows Live Spaces removed the photos instantly.
To perform their experiment, the researchers uploaded photos to each of the sites, then deleted them, but kept a note of direct URLs to the photos from the sites' content delivery networks.
When they checked 30 days later, these links continued to work for seven of the sites even though a typical user might think the photos had been removed.
Lazy approach
Joseph Bonneau, one of the PhD students who carried out the study, said: "This demonstrates how social networking sites often take a lazy approach to user privacy, doing what's simpler rather than what is correct.

Forcing Google to delete user data after six months could dent its ability to predict pandemics such as swine flu, said the search giant's co-founder.
Larry Page said he thought more debate was needed around the issue of storing user data.
The European Commission wants data ditched after six months but Mr Page said there were benefits to users.
"More dialogue is needed [with regulators]," he told UK journalists at a Google event in Hertfordshire.
Data clash
He said Google's ability to plot and predict potential pandemics would not be possible if the firm had to delete search data after six months.
"When we released data about Mexico flu trends we had a whole debate," he said.
"We were worried we would cause panic. But we decided the benefits outweighed the cost."
Mr Page said deleting search data after six months was "in direct conflict" with being able to map pandemics.

Un día de hace casi 20 años, Patrick Modiano encontró en un viejo periódico parisino de principios de los cuarenta un pequeño anuncio que le impresionó. Decía así: "Se busca a una joven, Dora Bruder, de 15 años, 1,55 metros, rostro ovalado, ojos gris marrón, abrigo sport gris, pullover burdeos, falda y sombrero azul marino, zapatos sport marrón. Ponerse en contacto con el señor y la señora Bruder, bulevar Ornano, 41, París". Modiano se obsesionó con el anuncio, con la chica y con la historia que ahí latía, en parte porque él había visitado mucho esa calle de adolescente. Se convirtió en una especie de detective privado contratado por sí mismo. Pronto descubrió que Dora Bruder era judía, que tras escaparse de casa fue detenida por la policía colaboracionista y deportada a Auschwitz, donde murió. Modiano buscó más. Revisó los archivos policiales, espulgó las viejas guías de teléfonos de París que nunca faltan en su casa, consultó fichas municipales, entrevistó a varios testigos de la época y del barrio que pudieran aún recordar que la conocieron. Anduvo como un lunático errando por las calles que Dora recorrió y que él conocía bien por haberlas andado de adolescente; entraba en los portales de los edificios que ella habitó y se quedaba ahí, quieto, esperando no se sabe qué... Ya no encontró nada más. Tenía el fin de la historia de Dora Bruder pero muy poca cosa de ella. Su rastro se había perdido casi definitivamente, como tantos otros. Sin embargo, con ese casi, con esas minúsculas certidumbres y utilizando también como material narrativo su propia obsesión y su búsqueda, Modiano escribió una joya estremecedora titulada Dora Bruder que habla de la memoria, de la dignidad y de la vida, contenida en apenas un centenar largo de páginas que ahora se vuelve a publicar en España.

Trial drugs 'reverse' Alzheimer's

US scientists say they have successfully reversed the effects of Alzheimer's with experimental drugs.
The drugs target and boost the function of a newly pinpointed gene involved in the brain's memory formation.
In mice, the treatment helped restore long-term memory and improve learning for new tasks, Nature reports.
The same drugs - HDAC inhibitors - are currently being tested to treat Huntington's disease and are on the market to treat some cancers.
They reshape the DNA scaffolding that supports and controls the expression of genes in the brain.
“ We need to do more research to investigate whether developing treatments that control this gene could benefit people with Alzheimer's ”

The Alzheimer's gene the drugs act upon, histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2), regulates the expression of a plethora of genes implicated in plasticity - the brain's ability to change in response to experience - and memory formation.

Ministers to trim DNA database

Ministers are to trim up to 850,000 DNA profiles from the current total of 4.5m on a national database after a court ruled innocent people must be removed.
Those arrested, but later released or acquitted, will have their profiles wiped after between six and 12 years.
Officials warned the changes could reduce the number of crimes solved.
But opposition parties accused the government of "giving as little as possible" in response to the European Court of Human Rights judgement.
Last year the court ruled that the database in England and Wales' was illegal - unlike Scotland's which was deemed "fair and proportionate".

The court said rules allowing police to keep everyone's profile on store were blanket and indiscriminate because they did not differentiate between criminals, the severity of their crimes and innocent people who had never been convicted of an offence.
Current practices in England, Wales and Northern Ireland allow police to retain a numeric genetic profile of everyone arrested for a recordable offence - regardless of whether they are charged or convicted.
