Vatican City - Secret Vatican archives on Pope Pius XII's activities in pre-war Germany will be opened in 2003, possibly shedding light on the Catholic church's role during World War 2, officials announced on Tuesday.

The documents detail the activities of then-Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, who was the Vatican's representative in Germany from 1922 to 1929, before he became Pope Pius XII at the outbreak of the conflict in 1939.

"The Holy See has decided to publish from January 1, 2003, all the archives concerning the activity of the nunciature in Berlin during the pontificate of Pius XI, between 1922 and 1939," said Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mejia, head of the Vatican library.

Iraq has handed back 409 boxes of Kuwaiti archives and documents looted during Baghdad's invasion of the Gulf state 12 years ago.

Kuwait says the archives are among a range of property missing since Baghdad's August 1990 invasion and seven-month occupation of the country, including military equipment and museum items.

Sherlock Holmes is to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

It's the first time at a fictional character has been recognised in this way.

Society secretary general Dr David Giachardi said the detective would certainly have been honoured had he really existed.

He told the BBC: "A hundred years on...we are stretching the rules slightly, tongue very slightly in cheek, to say here was a great man."

He added Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character "selflessly pursued bad people on behalf of the good, using science, courage and crystal clear thought processes."

New case study from freedominfo.org:Secrecy and Openness in the European Union
Enviado por editor en Sábado, 05 Octubre, 2002 - 02:06 (3556 lecturas)
Tema Noticias/News
Noticias/News National Security Archive Update
October 1, 2002

Today, October 1, 2002, freedominfo.org announces the Web publication of its
newest case study in the worldwide struggle for openness and freedom of
information - in this case, the decade-long effort to open the structures of
the European Union (EU). Authored by Tony Bunyan of the London-based NGO,
Statewatch, the study starts with the December 1993 code of access to EU
documents and covers every major development up through the June 2002
requirement of public registers - with which the European Commission is still
not in compliance today.

Bunyan describes the important leadership role taken by a handful of EU
governments, led by Denmark and Sweden and sometimes backed by the
Netherlands, Finland and the UK, in the face of strong opposition from the
forces of secrecy led by France and backed by Spain and Germany. On one
particularly contentious openness question in 1996, nine EU states lined up
for secrecy: France, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Portugal, Italy,
Austria and Greece.

Key to the progress to date has been the external challenges from civil
society (journalists, researchers, and voluntary groups), backed by liberal
judges and a diligent EU ombudsman. The current compromise Regulation, in
force since December 2001, has opened new battlegrounds. While much more EU
information is now available, especially from the EU Council, thousands of
documents do not appear on the required registers. In addition, NATO is
pressuring the EU to comply with NATO secrecy procedures left over from the
Cold War; and the areas of law enforcement and immigration are particularly
susceptible to increased secrecy in an official climate dominated by
counter-terrorism.

Yoko Ono's Lawyer Attacks Ex-Assistant's Credibility

By ROBERT F. WORTH

A former assistant to John Lennon and Yoko Ono denied in a Manhattan courtroom yesterday that he had stolen hundreds of photographs of the couple, saying he took them with his own camera. But a lawyer for Ms. Ono cast doubt on the assistant's credibility, asking him about entries from his own diary in which he wrote of deceiving Mr. Lennon and stealing the couple's stereo equipment.

The former assistant, Frederic Seaman, is being sued in United States District Court in Manhattan by Ms. Ono, who says he violated a confidentiality agreement he signed when he came to work in 1979.

In his first appearance on the stand, Mr. Seaman demonstrated the 35-millimeter camera he used to take the photographs, saying he took them for his own purposes. Although he was sometimes asked to take family photographs, he said the Lennons hired him for other tasks: helping with answering the phones and fan mail, doing the shopping and "helping John cook brown rice and generally keeping him company."

Havana to Unlock Hemingway Papers

By KATE ZERNIKE
The Cuban government has agreed to allow access to a trove of Ernest Hemingway's papers that experts say promises to illuminate the period in which he wrote some of his most significant works.

The collection, deteriorating amid rifles and stuffed African game heads in the basement of Hemingway's home outside Havana, includes 3,000 letters and documents, 3,000 photographs and 9,000 books, many with his musings in the margins — what one biographer, A. Scott Berg, called a "CAT scan of Hemingway's brain."
