Romania's foreign minister Mircea Geoana is trying to defuse a painful row with Israel, sparked by comments from Romanian President Ion Iliescu about the Holocaust. Mr Iliescu claimed last week in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz that "Jews were not the only victims of the Holocaust". That statement put pressure on ties already strained six weeks ago by a government claim that Jews had not been persecuted in Romania between 1940-1944.

Mircea Geoana, the Romanian minister of foreign affairs, is kept busy these days with frantic efforts to redress the balance with Israel. His colleagues keep upsetting this balance time and again with stupid, clumsy remarks.

The recent appearance on news stands of a monthly magazine claiming to inherit the mantle of the banned fascist Iron Guard seems to bear out these concerns. The magazine is entitled "Legionnaire's Objective". That clearly refers to the original title of the Iron Guard: when it was founded in 1924 by Corneliu Codreanu it was known as the "Legion of the Archangel Michael". Codreanu referred to his followers as Legionnaires. It was a nationalistic, anti-Semitic, a-political and extremely violent movement, which admired the Romanian peasant as saviour of the nation and condemned Jews as the root of all evil. To Romanian Jews, the appearance of a magazine claiming to champion such values can only be a bad sign.

U.S. Newswire

United States Helsinki Commission

Chairman Rep. Christopher H. Smith (R-NJ) observed the annual remembrance of the Porrajmos ("the Devouring" in Romani) and called on governments to ensure that the fundamental rights of Roma are respected.

During the night of August 2-3, 1944, the Romani camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau was liquidated. Nearly three thousand Romani men, women and children were killed in the gas chambers in a single night. Roma have come to remember their Holocaust experiences on these days.

Website will showcase post-Holocaust trial records to public

By THE CRIMSON STAFF

The Harvard Law School Library announced yesterday that it was launching a new website as part of a multi-million dollar effort to preserve and showcase its enormous archive of Nuremburg Trials papers.
The Nuremberg Trials Project is based on Harvard’s collection of one million pages, including trial documents and transcripts from the 12 Nuremburg trials and International Military Tribunal that tried German war criminals after World War II.

Secret papers belonging to the New Zealander credited with "saving the world" will be auctioned in England next week.

The World War II archives of Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Park include briefing papers on the invasion of Sicily, personal photographs of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and details of a secret meeting with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Richard Westwood-Brookes, of Mullock Madeley auctioneers, said the archives included 275 photographs and had been squirrelled away for 60 years, but he did not say where. Nor did he say how much they were expected to fetch.

Born in Thames, Sir Keith started his military career as a gunner at Gallipoli, but was wounded and had to leave the artillery because he could no longer ride a horse.

He became a fighter pilot instead, and ended World War I as New Zealand's second-best ace with 20 kills.

But he is best-known for his exploits during World War II.

Sir Keith commanded the Royal Air Force during the Dunkirk debacle and flew his own fighter plane over the battle to watch the German attack, often drifting within range of anti-aircraft fire.

He was then placed in charge of defending London and southern England from German bombing raids during the Battle of Britain.

Memoria Guerra/War Memory The aft fuselage of the B-29 "Enola Gay," the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, was moved back into the Garber restoration shop during the summer of 1999. Restoration of the aft section is being completed to prepare the entire aircraft for reassembly. The completely assembled aircraft will go on public display at the new Udvar-Hazy Center Museum, scheduled to open in 2003.
The forward fuselage of the Enola Gay was on display at the National Air and Space Museum between June 28, 1995 and May 18, 1998. See former exhibition information, including 360 panoramas of cockpit.
