The nonprofit archives organization has a temporary home in the United Steelworkers of America building on East Lehigh Street, but organizers hope to eventually build a permanent museum and community center in South Side Bethlehem, said Bruce Ward, president of the archives board of directors.
"We are going to create in Bethlehem a place that we can archive the lives, the pride, the stories and the memorabilia of steelworkers," Ward said. "We need to capture this now because, by the next generation, it will be gone."

Secret papers belonging to the New Zealander credited with "saving the world" will be auctioned in England next week.
The World War II archives of Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Park include briefing papers on the invasion of Sicily, personal photographs of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and details of a secret meeting with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Richard Westwood-Brookes, of Mullock Madeley auctioneers, said the archives included 275 photographs and had been squirrelled away for 60 years, but he did not say where. Nor did he say how much they were expected to fetch.
Born in Thames, Sir Keith started his military career as a gunner at Gallipoli, but was wounded and had to leave the artillery because he could no longer ride a horse.
He became a fighter pilot instead, and ended World War I as New Zealand's second-best ace with 20 kills.
But he is best-known for his exploits during World War II.
Sir Keith commanded the Royal Air Force during the Dunkirk debacle and flew his own fighter plane over the battle to watch the German attack, often drifting within range of anti-aircraft fire.
He was then placed in charge of defending London and southern England from German bombing raids during the Battle of Britain.

'La memòria i el perdó' obtuvo un premio en el Festival de Televisión de Venecia del 2002
La trama nace de la aparición del archivo completo de uno de los generales golpistas.
En la Nochevieja de 1982, en plena dictadura militar argentina, un grupo de jóvenes contrarios al régimen fueron detenidos y pasaron a formar parte de las listas de desaparecidos. Así arranca La memòria i el perdó, dura miniserie de dos episodios que hoy estrena TV-3 (22.05) y que protagonizan Virna Lisi, Jean Pierre Cassel, Xabier Elorriaga y Pep Cruz. Mañana jueves, a la misma hora, la tele autonómica catalana ofrecerá el segundo capítulo.
Coproducida con la RAI italiana, La memòria i el perdó se centra en los familiares de los desaparecidos y en el impacto que causa en los hijos de estos desaparecidos el conocer su verdadero origen.

A few months ago I participated in the annual meeting of the Mediterranean Studies Association in Granada. The same question turned up on various occasions in some of the debates that occurred in the sessions: in what direction did the Spaniards travel, what was their destination? The reply was simple. During the 16th and 17th centuries they travelled to the West Indies, and from the 18th to the first third of the 20th to Morocco and Algeria.

Imágenes de carteles exhortando a la resistencia, fotografías del paisaje urbano del Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat y testimonios de testigos-analistas como Josep Benet y Teresa Pàmies son algunas de las brozas con las que los videoartistas Julián Álvarez y Ángeles Moreno han tejido un particular homenaje digital a las víctimas de los bombardeos de Barcelona de 1938.
Barcelona bárbaramente bombardeada es una instalación de arte digital creada para internet que recuerda el sufrimiento de la ciudad en aquellos días en que la aviación italiana la sometió a duros castigos y que se cobró unas 3.000 víctimas, la mayoría durante cuatro días de enero y marzo.

Una exposición y un libro narran la historia de 35.000 voluntarios en la Guerra Civil

Un total de 180 fotografías y 250 documentos recuperan la historia de las Brigadas Internacionales, con los 35.000 voluntarios de más de cincuenta países que lucharon junto a la República en la Guerra Civil española de 1936-1939. "La República perdió la guerra, pero está claro también que ganó la batalla de la memoria", afirmó ayer el periodista Michael Lefebvre, que, con el historiador Rémi Skoutelsky, ha montado la exposición Las Brigadas Internacionales. Imágenes recuperadas, abierta hasta el 15 de septiembre en el Círculo de Bellas Artes, de Madrid (Alcalá, 42).

WASHINGTON (AP) - Harry Truman always denied that while in the White House he entertained the idea of having Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower run for president in 1948 - with Truman as his running mate.
But a newly discovered diary written by the nation's 33rd president reveals that Truman did make the offer while talking politics one summer afternoon with Eisenhower. Truman worried that Gen. Douglas MacArthur would run for president on the Republican ticket.
``I told Ike,'' Truman wrote, ``that if he (MacArthur) did that he (Eisenhower) should announce for the nomination for President on the Democratic ticket and that I'd be glad to be in second place, or Vice President.''
``I like the Senate anyway,'' the former Missouri senator wrote. ``Ike & I could be elected and my family & myself would be happy outside this great white jail, known as the White House.''
The account is the most revealing of 42 handwritten entries in a diary that until now, was mistakenly catalogued and filed with the book collection of the Truman Library. It remained in the stacks, apparently undisturbed, for 38 years until library staff began moving the collection earlier this year.

A 5,500-word diary in President Harry Truman's handwriting, unnoticed for decades, recently turned up at the Truman Library in Independence, Mo. Three pages were mysteriously loose and interleaved in the journal.
On these detached and reinserted pages was this entry: "6:00 P.M. Monday July 21, 1947. Had ten minutes conversation with Henry Morgenthau about Jewish ship in Palistine [sic]. Told him I would talk to Gen[eral George] Marshall about it."
On that day, news reached the world that 4,500 Jewish refugees seeking entry to Palestine aboard the ship Exodus 1947 had been seized by British soldiers. These "displaced persons" had been placed on three versels ostensibly headed to nearby Cyprus for detention until permitted entry to the Holy Land, where other Jews waited to welcome them. President Was Willing to Yield Democratic Nomination to Eisenhower

Archivists today announced the discovery of a diary kept in 1947 by President Harry S. Truman that details his willingness to yield the 1948 Democratic presidential nomination to then-Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower if Gen. Douglas MacArthur sought the Republican nomination.
On July 25, 1947, Truman and Eisenhower had a conversation about MacArthur's prospects:
"Ike & I think MacArthur expects to make a Roman Triumphal return to the U.S. a short time before the Republican Convention meets in Philadelphia. I told Ike that if he did that that he (Ike) should announce for the nomination for President on the Democratic ticket and that I'd be glad to be in second place, or Vice President. I like the Senate anyway. Ike & I could be elected and my family & myself would be happy outside this great white jail, known as the White House.

AP - Ukraine has declassified more than 1,000 files documenting a Soviet-era famine that killed up to 10 million people and was denied by Soviet officials for decades, officials announced.
The Interior Ministry timed the opening of the archives to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the devastating 1932-1933 famine, which claimed an estimated 7-10 million lives, ministry spokesman Oleksandr Zarubitskyi said.

El gobierno de los Estados Unidos ha estado al tanto de la existencia de fosas comunes en Hilla desde el pasado 3 de mayo, pero no ha tomado las medidas necesarias para proteger el lugar. Sólo la acción inmediata de las fuerzas de la coalición puede preservar la evidencia para cualquier procedimiento legal en el futuro.

This book is a compilation of the essays, images, records and materials assembled, displayed and generated by the project from its beginnigs to date (2000).
Culturas de archivo se inicia a principios de 2000 con los trabajos de investigación orientados a la producción de su primer montaje expositivo en la Fundació Antoni Tàpies de Barcelona, en septiembre de ese mismo año.
La continuidad del proyecto viene marcada por una segunda edición en la sala de la Nau de la Universitat de València, con la incorporación de nuevos grupos documentales y trabajos de autor, la aparición del portal www.culturasdearchivo.ua.es y una tercera edición, acogida por el Centro de Fotografía de la Universidad de Salamanca. 
Este libro recoge los textos, imágenes, registros y materiales recopilados, expuestos o generados por el proyecto desde sus inicios hasta la fecha de publicación del mismo.
El álbum familiar como contenedor de la memoria íntima; el archivo histórico, antropológico, etnológico, científico, represivo o policial; las diferentes categorías del museo como destino público del documento; la compulsión privada de archivar en imágenes; la construcción de identidades nacionales y/o etnológicas mediante la identificación de sus objetos, paisajes o individuos; la tensión entre verdad y ficción documental, entre archivo y exposición, entre uso y abuso del documento; la repercusión iconográfica y conceptual de la estructura archivística y documental sobre la estética y creación contemporáneas; ciertos absurdos de la costumbre taxonómica; las ramificaciones contemporáneas del arte de la memoria; la capacidad de las organizaciones de imágenes y textos para catalogar y, al mismo tiempo construir la realidad que representan: cada uno de estos conceptos y áreas de conocimiento forma parte de esa “cultura de archivo” que este trabajo pretende definir mediante los códigos iconográficos y las estructuras expositivas que ella misma ofrece.

El autor publica 'Armonía celestial', escrito tras caer la dictadura en su país

Tras la caída del régimen comunista en Hungría, en 1989, Péter Esterházy quiso saber cómo se comportaba la lengua con el paso de la dictadura a la democracia, cómo se dejaba de escribir entre líneas para decir las cosas en libertad. Ese peculiar experimento duró nueve años, los que tardó el autor en escribir Armonía celestial, una obra que recrea la historia de su familia y la de Hungría a lo largo de casi cuatro siglos, y que el autor presentó ayer en Barcelona.
