Segunda misión en Salamanca
La exposición del Archivo evita exhibir mucha documentación de Cataluña

La Comissió de la Dignitat volvió ayer a Salamanca. La ocasión lo merecía. El consorcio Salamanca 2002 inauguró, gracias a un convenio firmado el año pasado con el Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, la muestra "Propaganda en guerra", comisariada por Miguel Ángel Jaramillo, director del Archivo General de la Guerra Civil Española, de donde procede la mayoría de los documentos expuestos. Pero la Comissió no pudo entrar en las salas del Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones. Por la mañana, porque la visita guiada con Jaramillo era sólo para la prensa. Y por la tarde, porque no habían sido invitados a la inauguración oficial. Y eso que entre los presentes había un senador (Carles Bonet, de ERC) y un diputado (Joaquim Ferrer, de CiU), los responsables de Cultura de UGT Cataluña y de IC-Verds, o Josep Guia, de Acció Cultural del País Valencià. Así las cosas, la veintena de integrantes de la Comissió que ayer se desplazó hasta Salamanca se limitó a desplegar una pancarta en la que se leía: "¿El botín de guerra es cultura?".

Una exposición con 550 documentos muestra en Salamanca el vigor de las consignas ideológicas.

La propaganda durante la Guerra Civil española alcanzó 'una relevancia excepcional', según se establece a través de los más de 550 documentos que se muestran en la exposición Propaganda en guerra, que se inauguró ayer en Salamanca dentro de la programación de la capitalidad cultural europea. La documentación, procedente fundamentalmente de los fondos del Archivo General de la Guerra Civil, analiza los sistemas, procedimientos y técnicas empleados por los dos bandos durante la contienda. Representantes de la denominada Comissió de la Dignitat protestaron ayer contra la utilización de documentos reclamados desde Cataluña, pero el comisario de la exposición aseguró que ninguno de ellos se muestra en el Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones.

— The Vietnam Veterans Memorial — along with Arlington National Cementary among the most somber of all Washington's monuments — turned 20 years old Monday, with tributes planned by veterans and survivors of the dead and missing.
The austere V-shaped granite wall is inscribed with the names of 58,229 veterans who died or went missing between 1959 and 1975 during the Vietnam War, widely viewed as the most controversial of American military engagements.

US and Cuba join forces to preserve Hemingway archives

Cuba and the United States have signed a cultural cooperation agreement to preserve the archives of US novelist Ernest Hemingway, who lived on the island for more than 20 years.
The agreement was signed in the gardens of Finca Vigia, the airy white house outside Havana where the writer lived and wrote several of his masterpieces.
President Fidel Castro, members of Hemingway's family and a delegation from the north-east US state of Massachusetts, led by Democratic Representative James McGovern, were present for the signing.

*European Investment Bank Issues New Transparency Policy

Today, November 7, 2002, freedominfo.org reports the coming publication of a
new transparency policy at the European Investment Bank (EIB). The new rule
will soon be posted on the EIB web site <http://www.eib.org>, but a written
copy was provided to freedominfo.org in advance of Internet issuance.
The new rule continues to emphasize the EIB’s willingness to honor requests
for confidentiality by third parties. It indicates that the EIB will follow
the disclosure practices of the banking industry.
About 16 months in the making, the new policy is unlikely to assuage critics,
who particularly have sought some break in the strict confidentiality with
which the bank guards its staff appraisals of the nearly 300 projects, worth
nearly 40 billion euros, approved each year.
The new rules spell out a series of reasons for nondisclosure. Some are
familiar, such as protection of personal privacy and the internal
decision-making process. Others exceptions appear to sweep in the transparency
standards of the private sector.

El debate sobre los restos de las personas enterradas en fosas comunes al final de la Guerra Civil ha reavivado la memoria sobre la suerte que corrieron los que perdieron aquella contienda. El escritor gijonés Marcelino Laruelo, autor de Asturias, octubre del 37. El Cervera a la vista! y La libertad es un bien muy preciado refresca lo ocurrido en aquellos años. Parte del texto de ambos libros aparecen en la página de internet www.asturiasrepublicana.com. El primer texto relata el final de la guerra en Asturias y la evacuación hacia Francia de milicianos y civiles, en una huida desesperada por mar.

De la voluntad de pensar aspectos de la realidad actual proviene nuestro deseo de hacer un trabajo relacionado con la Guerra Civil Española. Como ocurre cuando una persona se ve obligada, a causa de un conflicto o crisis interior, a repensar aspectos esenciales de su identidad y de los diversos componentes que la han hecho ser de un modo determinado, la sola mención de los sucesos de este apasionado conflicto bélico y humano que implicó a más de 25 millones de personas entre 1936 y 1939, provoca el desasosiego entre aquellos más reacios a reflexionar sobre sus orígenes. La interpretación histórica que se haga del mismo, tanto de sus antecedentes en la Segunda República como su continuación con los 36 años de dictadura de Francisco Franco, apelan directamente a un cuestionamiento del contexto social, político, económico y educativo que ha dado lugar a las personas y la sociedad que hoy somos. Hasta las experiencias más trágicas pueden ser pensadas, con el fin de no construir las sociedades sobre una falsa madurez o sobre un silencio interesado.

Photographic Memory: Showing Shahn's Sources

Politics so informed Ben Shahn's art that any exhibition of his work reads like the Cliffs Notes to 20th-century American liberalism. And the one-room show on view at the D.C. Jewish Community Center, "For All These Rights: Works by Ben Shahn, 1936-1970," is no exception.
But thanks to curator Laura Katzman of Randolph-Macon Woman's College, this show has a subtler, more interesting point to make about Shahn's relationship to the media. Katzman collected a strong selection of photographs -- some taken by Shahn and other documentary photographers, some clipped by Shahn from newspapers -- that provided the source material for so many of the artist's images. Katzman also included magazine covers and illustrations he designed, and placed them, when possible, adjacent to clippings they derived from. Packed into a display case in the center of the room, this trove of imagery turns out to be the Ben Shahn Rosetta stone.

Baroness Thatcher opening archive extension

FORMER Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was today due to open a new wing of the Churchill Archives Centre at Cambridge University.
The purpose-built block holds 2,500 boxes of Sir Winston Churchill's papers, ranging from letters he wrote as a child to his school reports.
More than 2,000 boxes of Baroness Thatcher's papers are also stored there, alongside archives of modern public figures from the Churchill era and beyond.
Allen Packwood, director of the centre, said the new fireproof block -- boasting the latest in security measures -- was essential for the centre's aims.
"What it will enable us to do is carry on adding to the collection. Our agenda is to preserve this material for present and future generations," he said.
The centre is open to the public, by appointment.
Its vast material is also available online to schools.
"We're looking at more ways in which to make this material available as widely as possible," Mr Packwood added.
Lady Thatcher played a key role in promoting development of the new wing.
Sir John Boyd, Master of Churchill College, said: "I am delighted that this college should enjoy the support of another illustrious occupant of 10 Downing Street. Lady Thatcher has not only ensured that her own papers will be accessible, she has also helped secure the future of many other important collections."
The Churchill papers were bought for the nation with a controversial £12 million grant from National Heritage Lottery Fund and the John Paul Getty Foundation in 1995.

Vatican secrets revealed in Pope's archive

Vatican City - Secret Vatican archives on Pope Pius XII's activities in pre-war Germany will be opened in 2003, possibly shedding light on the Catholic church's role during World War 2, officials announced on Tuesday.
The documents detail the activities of then-Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, who was the Vatican's representative in Germany from 1922 to 1929, before he became Pope Pius XII at the outbreak of the conflict in 1939.
"The Holy See has decided to publish from January 1, 2003, all the archives concerning the activity of the nunciature in Berlin during the pontificate of Pius XI, between 1922 and 1939," said Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mejia, head of the Vatican library.

La Seminci arranca desde la senda del compromiso social

La 47 Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid (Seminci) arranca este viernes con la proyección de "11.09.01-September 11", una visión plural de diversos realizadores sobre los ataques terroristas contra los Estados Unidos, lo que confirma una vez más el compromiso social de este certamen, según informa EFE.
Ken Loach, Sean Penn, Samira Makhmalbaf y Danis Tanovic figuran en la nómina de los once directores que aportan su particular enfoque en esta película próxima al género documental, fuera de concurso y en la misma línea de "Kandahar", que abrió la Seminci el año pasado con un alegato contra el régimen talibán en Afganistán.
Al margen de esta vocación social que tradicionalmente ha caracterizado el festival de Valladolid, también ocuparán un lugar preferente la reivindicación de profesionales no suficientemente reconocidos por el gran público, y la apertura hacia otros lenguajes y tendencias cinematográficas que se realizan en la actualidad.
