Cesare Lombroso Categoría : Principal / / Caesare Lombroso Cesare Lombroso was an Italian physician, psychiatrist and pioneer criminologist, who caused a sensation with the publication in 1876 of his book L'uomo delinquente... (Criminal Man). In this work, Lombroso employed Darwinian ideas of evolution to account for criminal behaviour.
Measuring the heads of living and executed criminals against the skulls of apes, prehistoric humans and what he and his contemporaries saw as 'primitive' peoples, Lombroso concluded that criminals were in fact victims of atavism.

Alphonse Bertillon Categoría : Principal / / Bertillon In France, statistical reasoning was employed by Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914), to create a new system of bodily measurement, specifically for identifying criminals. Bertillon was a bureaucrat. The son and brother of physicians with strong interests in the collection and interpretation of medical statistics, he developed and implemented his system while chief of the identification service of the Paris police. It proved most useful. Indeed, the success of the system encouraged him to refine it continually until his death, even though his work met with criticism from authorities such as Francis Galton. Francis Galton Categoría : Principal / / Francis Galton Francis Galton (1822-1911) was arguably the most respected and influential British scientific advocate of schemes of hereditary improvement in the half-century or so after 1860.
His ideas informed thinking about race and national identity in Britain and Australia, between 1860 and 1920.
Galton's early life, his wide ranging scientific pursuits between 1844 and the mid-1860s, and his creation of eugenics, the science of improving human heredity characteristics are outlined to provide a comprehensive background about Galton and his influence on the 'science' of statistics.

Adolphe Quetelet Categoría : Principal / / Adolphe Quetelet Adolphe Quetelet (1796-1874) was a gifted Belgian mathematician and astronomer, whose application of statistical reasoning to social phenomena profoundly influenced the course of European social science.
The history of the social sciences from the late 1830s onwards is, in large measure, the story of the application and refinement of ideas about the operation of probability in human affairs. These ideas about probability gained widespread currency in intellectual and government circles through the writings of Quetelet.

Thomas Huxley Categoría : Principal / / Thomas Huxley Thomas Henry Huxley was probably Darwin's most ardent champion in the two decades after the publication of the Origin of Species in 1859. He was also one of the first British intellectuals to apply the theory of natural selection to humanity, so as to explain the course of human evolution.
By the end of the 1860s, Huxley had become particularly interested in the use of photography as a tool for classifying racial difference. His interest was in all probability stimulated by Francis Galton's experimentation with composite photography.

Hiroshima is a city on which an atomic bomb was dropped.
Hiroshima is a city with many memorials for the lives lost.
Hiroshima is a city which continually seeks peace.
Everyone, look at Hiroshima's path over the last century.
Distant memories, bitter remorse and alarm at an age past.
Everyone, please, look at what the atomic bomb brought.
Suffering pain, anger, and apprehension toward an uncertain future.....
Hiroshima in this nuclear age, will continue holding high the flame of hope.

Good Memory (Marcelo Brodsky) Categoría : Principal / Archivos de Autor / Author Archives When I came back to Argentina after living in Spain for many years, I had just turned forty, and felt the need to work on my identity. Photography, with its precise ability to freeze a point in time, was the tool I used for this purpose.
I began going through my family photographs, the ones from my youth, the ones from school. I found our class portrait from first year [eighth grade], taken in 1967, and felt the need to know what had become of each one of my classmates.
I decided to hold a 25th reunion of my classmates from the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires so that we could see each other again. I invited those I was able to find to my house, and proposed doing a portrait of each of them.
I made a huge enlargement of the '67 picture, the flrst one in which we were all together, to serve as a backdrop for the portraits, and asked each classmate to include an element of his or her current life in their portrait.
I continued to do portraits of those classmates who did not come to the reunion, but the large photograph could not be moved. I took small copies of it along to include in the portraits I did of those I was able to find. The portraits were done in Buenos Aires, Madrid, Robledo de Chavela (Spain), and New York.
Later, a ceremony was organized, in memory of the students of the school who had disappeared or were murdered by state terrorism in the black years of the dictatorship. After twenty years, the school authorities accepted, for the flrst time, that the missing be officially recognized in the school's main hall. It was a historic occasion.
I decided to work on the surface of the large photograph that had served as a backdrop for the portraits of my classmates, and to write a few thoughts about each of their lives on the image...

Jewish Heritage Categoría : Principal / Archivo Expuesto/Exhibited Archive / Memorial Sites & Archives What makes up a people's identity? - Its History. What makes up its History? - Sources: documents, books, artifacts - the speechless heritage of the past. And people able to make them speak.
After decades of wars, genocide and communist oppression the cultural heritage of the Jewish past in Russia was considered lost. However, that heritage has not disappeared completely: it has been kept in numerous state repositories and in some declined Jewish communities. There is a vital necessity to rescue these remnants of the Jewish heritage from oblivion.
In the late 1980s that task appeared utopian for the "Black Years" of the Communist Russia were also marked by the prohibition of Jewish Studies in the USSR. The scholarly exploration of the Jewish past was deprecated during the Soviet era. In 1988 there was almost no one to continue the scholarly achievements of the late nineteenth century historians: Bershadsky, Dubnov, An-sky, and Gessen - the intellectuals of the turn of century who considered collecting, researching and publishing sources of Jewish history a task of paramount importance. The Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Commission, established in St. Petersburg in 1908, launched a variety of projects aimed at gathering and publishing sources of Jewish history. Continued after 1917 for approximately twenty years, those projects brought important results which facilitated research of documentary materials by Western scholars throughout the 20th century. However, since the Chair of Jewish Culture of the Academy of Sciences in Kiev - the last Jewish scholarly institution in the Soviet Union - was closed by the authorities in 1948, there was no systematic research on Jewish history in Russia for some forty years. Nowadays a new generation of Russian scholars is once again developing an interest in Judaic studies, and starting from scratch.
The activities of the Jewish Heritage Society commenced in Moscow in 1989. A group of enthusiasts of Jewish history and culture is pursuing the goals defined by the Russian-Jewish historians of the turn of the century. Above all, the Society seeks to collect, to preserve and to share among scholars the "remnants of the remnants" - the documentary heritage of the Jewish past in Eastern Europe.

Holocaust Trauma Project Categoría : Principal / Memoria y Derechos Humanos/Memory and Human Rights / Holocausto Video Testimony Pilot Study of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Holocaust Survivors
Principal Investigator: Dori Laub, MD, Deputy Director (Trauma Studies), Genocide Studies Program
Purpose:
The purpose of this research is to systematically assess the effects and potential psychotherapeutic benefits of reconstructing traumatic Holocaust experiences. The reconstruction of the history of personal trauma will be conducted through the creation of a videotaped testimony and a multi-disciplinary analysis of the testimony. This study will test two hypotheses:
(1) Is massive psychic trauma related to chronic severe mental illness with psychotic decompensation that leads to either chronic hospitalization or multiple psychiatric hospitalizations?
(2) Does a therapeutic intervention such as video testimony that helps build a narrative for the traumatic experience and gives it a coherent expression help in alleviating its symptoms and changing its course? May these changes be attributed to direct intervention (through the occurrence of the testimonial event itself), or through indirect intervention (through the impact on treatment planning, involvement with family members or the survivor community, or the knowledge that the videotaped testimony will be made available to others)?
