360 degrees  Popular
Over the past year, we have been collecting the stories of inmates, correctional officers, lawyers, judges, parole officers, parents, victims, and others whose lives have been affected by the criminal justice system. In tandem with a new series on National Public Radio, Prison Diaries, we've conducted interviews and given inmates and officers tape recorders so they could keep audio diaries of their experiences in prison. Each story is focused around a specific case and is told from the perspectives of the people involved. As you listen to the stories, you can explore each speaker's personal space by navigating 360 degrees-up, down, and around-prison cells, offices, judges' chambers, and living rooms. To address many of the issues affecting our nation's growing prison population, we will add new stories throughout the year. Be sure to bookmark this site and come back often.

Archives of Memory  Popular
Multiple Voices from the Kosovar Experience This web site combines the materials gathered for the Archives of Memory, under the programme Psychosocial and Trauma Response jointly implemented in Kosovo by the International Organization for Migration and the University of Pristina. The documents preserved in the Archives of Memory consist of letters, diaries, drawings, interviews and pictures, which yield different accounts of the Kosovar experience of war and forced migration. Part of these documents were produced during the training course for psychosocial counselors (see the pages on Course Material and Video), the main section of the IOM programme, which devoted one of its sessions to the collection of war memories from individuals and groups. The documents can be consulted through the database, which provides differents fields of research. They can, however, also be browsed in their given order: each of the documents is collected by type (provided with number of registration in the database, and their site can easily be navigated).

Basque Oral History Project  Popular
Over the years many people have recorded interviews with Basque people in the American West for various research projects. Many of these audio tapes are archived at the Basque Museum & Cultural Center in Boise, Idaho and in the Basque Studies Library at the University of Nevada, Reno. Recently, a grant provided by the Basque Government is allowing these interviews to be transformed and published into a medium that makes them more accessible to the public. The Museum is actively posting the interviews already collected and is collecting more stories from those people yet to be chronicled.

Picture Projects  Popular
Picture Projects was launched in 1995 to create online spaces for voices traditionally overlooked by mainstream media. Dubbed by Photo Insider "the gold standard in interactive documentary," Picture Projects is renowned for blurring the lines between art and documentary. We have worked with photographers, journalists, and other artists to create award-winning online documentaries. akaKurdistan, an online archive of images and stories created in collaboration with photographer Susan Meiselas, was designed to collect and preserve the history of the Kurdish people. Other projects include RE: Vietnam — Stories Since the War, a collaboration with Marc Weiss of POV Interactive to create a digital companion for the PBS broadcast of Maya Lin, A Strong Clear Vision, and Farewell to Bosnia with photographer Gilles Peress. Picture Projects also produces unique websites and interactive installations for cultural institutions including The Women's Museum, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Tenement Museum. For corporate clients such as IBM, Picture Projects tells their stories and history through immersive, nonlinear narratives. Though our approach is technologically savvy, Picture Projects is defined by its commitment to creating innovative web-based tools for social and political reform.

The National Visionary Leadership Project  Popular
Project Overview: The National Visionary Leadership Project is a nationwide program which provides an unprecedented archive of first person video biographies focused on intergenerational leadership using state-of –the-art technology to collect, preserve and distribute worldwide the living history of African-American leaders. Here is how it works. The National Visionary Leadership Project will record, preserve and disseminate the extensive, historic, videotaped biographical interviews of living African-American leaders, both national and community based. Establish an unprecedented, comprehensive videotape archive to preserve this material for generations to come, Actively involve African-American students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the research and collection of this material, Collaborate mainly with HBCU faculty in the creation of related independent study curricula and course material, Develop a state-of-the-art, internationally-accessible web site for the digital storage and distribution of these historic interviews, as well as scheduled, live, on-line student interviews with individual elder leaders. Initiate, where possible, an ongoing intergenerational mentoring program between elder national leaders and selected students, so that a new generation of African-American leaders will gain confidence and wisdom in the realization that they are part of an ongoing tradition of African -American leadership, Organize an annual student conference for intensive training in leadership skills, contemporary social and political issues most strongly effecting African-American communities, technical computer and video skills for recording comprehensive interviews with living African-American leaders, etc. , Produce, from the collected interviews and related material, a series of broadcast-quality television biographies for dissemination nationwide, both on the educational and commercial levels, Create a series of printed educational and community discussion guides to accompany the videotaped material, Share with countless thousands of people of every color, all over the world, the extraordinary legacy of living African-American pioneers, and to create a permanent, solid foundation for new young leaders to build on, for generations to come.
